Dr. Sunil Jeswani of Sharp helps patients in Ghana
In Pantang, Ghana, there are special people - at a very special place - on a quest to provide critical orthopedic care to patients in underserved areas. Here, in this West African village, children and adults living with debilitating musculoskeletal conditions, such as scoliosis and complex spine deformities, and who otherwise would not have access to such treatment, can get the help they need to transform their lives.
“Helping the world stand tall” is the motto of this special place: FOCOS Hospital, which operates with donations and sponsorships through fundraising efforts in Ghana and the United States. Since its inception in 1998, FOCOS care providers have seen more than 100,000 patients and conducted more than 4,000 complex spine surgeries, joint replacements and more for people in critical need.
This is where the expertise of volunteer physicians like Dr. Sunil Jeswani, a neurosurgeon with Sharp Grossmont Hospital and Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, enter the picture.
Dr. Jeswani, whose specialties include brain, skull base, spinal cord and spinal column surgeries, volunteers as a partner surgeon with the U.S. nonprofit 33 Spine Align. The organization was formed to raise money and recruit doctors for missions to FOCOS Hospital, with which 33 Spine Align has a collaborative partnership. Dr. Jeswani’s first mission to FOCOS, where he assisted people with deformities and led minimally-invasive surgeries on 11 patients, convinced him that it wouldn’t be his last. He continues his humanitarian work with the hospital today.
“I decided to become a partner surgeon at FOCOS because it allows me to provide care to these patients who otherwise would have no access to this chance to change their lives,” says Dr. Jeswani. “It also allows me the opportunity to bring some advanced surgical techniques to FOCOS and to learn from their talented surgeons as well.”

Mammogram didn't catch my breast cancer! 😢 I don't trust them nor have faith in them. Other countries are rejected the mammogram because of the radiation. PS - I treated my breast cancer holistically and I'm 4 years 9 months cancer free!

Why would a nurse flush a chemo drug through the veins after being given it. I told the doctor I was given the one and have trouble walking. She said she'd lower the dose. But to flush it. Then this nurse let the IV run. Not drip, into my vein. Lord what pain. I never want her again

Both of my sisters were diagnosed with breast cancers. One had a tumor that was so deep that only a sharp eyed radiologist noticed a slight change from the last mammogram she had the year prior. It could not be palpated and wasn't visible on the mammogram, but they immediately ordered ultrasounds. It was then that the tumor was found. It was a slow growing, rare type that was fortunately still encapsulated within the duct. A lumpectomy was performed and she had follow up radiation. She's been clear ever since. My other sister had hers detected through mammography. It was caught in the earliest stages, and was also resolved in the same manner as the other sister. Never EVER skip a yearly mammogram because they do, indeed, save lives!

I know a Vietnam vet. One of the simplest yet most terrifying things he once told us after we asked him for some war stories was "..at night it’s really something.. you can’t see anything.. so you can’t tell if your bullets are hitting bodies or trees…" then he walked off. Left me and my buddies atarring at the floor in aww.

Absolutely useless. You spend all this time on putting a drop in your eye. Do you think I'm an idiot. You don't give ANY information on the CRITICAL information on when and how many drops go into your eye. Example, 4 times a day put a drop of certain solution in your eye. Then how often do you use the second solution. How many days is this needed. Unbelievable that NO ONE discussed this with me.

The hyper vigilance wears you down the most. Being constantly on edge thinking you're going to be attacked at all hours of the day and night. Imagine sitting in your house in the middle of the afternoon, alone with your dog, where you should feel the safest, and someone unexpectedly knocks on your door loudly. You grab the gun sitting next to you, because you always have a weapon within reach, and creep up to the door or the window to see who it is, all while listening for other noises and using your sense of smell to pick up on other people who don't belong. Or going to the gast station or grocery store and sitting in your vehicle for sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes a couple hours, watching everyone. Waiting for the foot traffic to die down so you can "make a break for it" and get out of your vehicle to do what you need to do. Or if you do decide to leave your house and go out to dinner with a friend (because going alone is sometimes damn near impossible), you have to make sure the hostess seats you in a corner or somewhere where your back can be against the wall. Then as you're walking to your table, you're visually checking people out, looking for threats, and looking for escape routes. Then while your friend is looking at the menu, you're still watching your surroundings because you feel like they aren't looking out for the dangers that you are and you don't feel safe in order to read the menu. You get upset over the smallest things not going right, because in your mind its a life or death situation, even if its something as ordinary as a shipment being sent to the wrong address or a driver almost causing a fender bender because they were too busy playing on their phone. I seem to be in the fight response category the majority of the time. Sometimes I feel so dangerous that I isolate myself for days or weeks on end and dont leave my house. Not so much to keep myself safe, but for the safety of others. You feel constantly worn down and your body is always sore and in pain with muscle aches like youve been physically fighting all day. You find yourself just staring into nothing. You cant sleep because evey little noise wakes you up. When you do finally fall asleep you have nightmares, then when you wake up from those, you fight falling back asleep because your thoughts are easier to deal with than the bad dreams. You miss the things you used to like to do like going to new places or even doing simple every day things like going to see a movie. You break down in tears when something reminds you of the event or events that caused you to have PTSD in the first place. These are all things I personally deal with, and have been dealing with for over 20 years. If you dont have PTSD and want to know what someone might be experiencing, reread what I wrote every single day and imagine living your life like that.
